China’s SUV market is hot. Market players are:
1: Imported SUVs such as Toyota Land Cruiser, Honda CRV (most popular small size SUV), BMW X5, etc. (300,000RMB and above) Pro: Best vehicle to impress clients and hot babes. Con: Expensive to own and to maintain. Depreciate very fast. Target market: government agencies or joint venture companies.
2: Joint Venture SUVs such as 北京吉普:- Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, 帕杰罗速跑、郑州日产帕拉丁、雪佛兰开拓者, (120,000 – 300,000 RMB). Pro: Tried and true foreign (also means outdated) design and technology. Spare parts availability. Con: Depreciate fast. The design will be phased out within couple of years. Target market: Newly rich Chinese middle class
3: Made in China SUVs such as: 赛弗, 中兴, 风景, 北京吉普 2020. Pro: Cheap, (below 100,000RMB). Con: Many problems with design and quality. Target market: Small business owners and urban Yuppie.
4: Often ignored are the pick-up players such as: 长城 pick-up. Pro: Dirt cheap (blow 50,000RMB), some runs on diesel. Con: No face vehicle. Restricted to enter major cities such as Beijing third ring road. Target market: small business owners and suburban farmers.
