Education
McCain: McCain supports allowing parents to enroll their children in public, private, or religious schools, arguing that lower-income students should have the same right wealthy students have to attend a school that meets their needs. McCain also believes in merit pay for teachers. On college funding, McCain is generally in favor of higher federal funding for education, with an emphasis on needy students. He also supports increasing federal funding to community colleges in an effort to allow more people who have lost their jobs to outsourcing access to training.
Obama: Obama does not support school vouchers, saying they could lead to further "stratification" of the education system. He sees voucher systems as siphoning resources from public schools. Obama supports more federal funding for schools. And while he supports testing, he sees the No Child Left Behind Act as too rigid. Obama supports raising federal Pell grants for college students, as well as cutting interest rates on student loans. He also wants to mandate that all federal student loans be offered by the government instead of subsidizing private lenders. Obama's main proposal for helping college students is a $4,000 annual tax credit to help pay for college in return for public service after graduation.
