Taxes
McCain: McCain wants to cut taxes for all taxpayers, with the proportionally largest breaks going to the country's wealthiest people via an extension of the Bush tax cuts. He has also proposed doubling the write-off for dependents from $3,500 to $7,000. McCain says he would fund his plan by reducing government spending. The senator also wants to repeal the Alternative Minimum Tax, reduce the corporate tax rate from 35% to 25%, and keep the capital gains tax at its current level. A recent report from the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center said McCain's plan would increase the national debt by as much as $4.5 trillion with interest over 10 years. On the estate tax, McCain would make it permanent with a $5 million exemption and a 15% rate; Obama would also make it permanent but with a $3.5 million exemption and a 45% rate.
Obama: Obama would renew the Bush tax cuts for lower- and middle-income families, but allow them to expire for households making more than $250,000 a year—meaning their taxes would increase. Proportionally, those in the lowest income brackets would benefit the most from Obama's tax breaks. Middle-class families would see up to $1,000 under Obama's proposals, and retirees making under $50,000 would not pay income tax. Obama plans to pay for his plan by closing "$1 trillion" in corporate tax loopholes. Also, he would increase the capital gains and dividend tax rates from the current 15% rate to somewhere between 20% to 25% for families earning more than $250,000, and lessen the burden of the AMT. The Tax Policy Center estimates Obama's plan could increase the national debt by as much as $3.3 trillion with interest over 10 years. Obama is going to raise taxes on capital gains, and also aims to collect higher corporate taxes by closing current loopholes in the tax code that many companies use.
