General Manager

LOCATION

Guangzhou, China

COMPANY

A US based consumer products company with its Chinabusiness established in Guangzhou. The company has 2 manufacturing operations in China. Annual sales are in the range of US$200 million, with a headcount of 1,300 (500 of that in sales & commercial divisions, and 800 in plants).

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

The General Manager, China will report directly to the President, Asia Pacific.

EDUCATION

A university degree is a must. Postgraduate qualifications such as an MBA will be an asset.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will have profit and loss responsibility for the Country and be responsible for the development and recommendation of short and long term commercial strategies designed to maximize the growth and profitability of the China operations. He/She will have overall management responsibilities for the sales and marketing functions. In addition, the successful candidate will manage relationships with relevant government bodies. He/She will work closely with Distribution, Manufacturing, Technical Group and Global Business Development to ensure consistent business strategies and successful commercialization of product bundles.

Develop and recommend short and long term Commercial strategies designed to maximize the growth and profitability of the China operations.
Control and coordinate the Commercial operations and activities by constantly monitoring performance and guiding the subordinates.
Prepare and present the annual Sales and Marketing plans for approval.

Sales:
-Develop, recommend and implement the sales strategies and objectives.

-Ensure the production of sales forecasts, selling cost budgets and sales targets.

-Assesses and analyze the retail environment to identify business opportunities and pinpoints problems for improvement.

-Monitor the production of timely information related to customers and competitors and ensure that an appropriate response is formulated and implemented.

- Strengthen the quality, efficiency and performance of the Sales team (including Distributors Sales Force) through appropriate structure and systems, staffing, introduction of incentive plans and training programs.

Marketing:
- Set short-long term marketing objectives (shares, volume, profits) in collaboration with GM/Senior Management.

-Develop recommend and implement marketing strategies to achieve the marketing objectives.

-Develop bundles and devise plans to commercialize them.

-Monitor and anticipate consumers and competitive trends in order to identify growth opportunities within the market place

-Monitor business/product performance and implement corrective/improvement actions where necessary.

-Supervise the preparation and implementation of comprehensive advertising and communication campaign to drive growth.

-Evaluate and recommend product pricing.

-Recruit, build and develop a team of marketing people.

Maintains relationship with government bodies, local authorities and the general community where appropriate to promote the company’s image.
Within the delegated limit of authority, approve (and sign) commercial contracts, approve payments of Sales and Marketing expenses. Recommend any expenditure in excess of limits. Work with Sales force/Distributors/ Manufacturing/Technical groups to ensure successful commercialization of product bundles.
Approve the addition, elimination and alteration of positions in Sales and Marketing functions, ensuring at all times the soundness of the organization and the presence of adequate number of competent staff to meet current and future needs and for accomplishing business objectives.
Interrelate with Division/Greater China and Global Business Development group to keep abreast of Corporate/Divisional business strategies and product bundles and apply/implement them in China where appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will be a commercially savvy individual with a strong marketing orientation with at least 14 years of Sales or Marketing experience of which the last 4 years in Management (Marketing or Sales) in China consumer products company, preferable with national responsibilities. Fluent in English and Mandarin (spoken, written and reading).
