General Interview Technique

A. Common Interview Questions
Ask yourself these questions before you go in to an interview:
1. How will you know when you have become a success? Promotion, bonus, acceptance of your opinion or request, and respect other people show to you
2. How will you describe yourself with three adjectives? Optimistic, curious, honest, and perseverant
3. How will your subordinates describe you with three adjectives? Clear-minded, experienced, Fair
4. What need do you expect to satisfy by accepting this position?
Challenge, learning, contribution, and people
5. If you encountered serious difficulties in this job, what will they be?
I don’t think so. Maybe initially, need time to be used to the way of doing business. Also what I have learned at Insead may be quite different from the practical way of valuation
6. If you had a choice, will you rather draw up plans or implement them?
Implement, because it is of more fun, and exciting.
7. State three situations in which you did not succeed? Why ?
8. When you fire someone what will be you key objective? Fairness, efficiency, and leadership
9. What would you do if you detected a peer falsifying an expense report? Depending on the amount being falsified. If too big, fire him. If small and without other occurrence, talk to him in person.
10. We all tell the occasional white lies? Give me three examples from your own professional experience? When coming home late, tell wife I work overtime while I actually drink at friend’s home; when friend seriously damaged, tell him he will recover soon, hiding the fact that he will never be the same as before; whey my son ask to visit zoo, tell him the zoo is closed.
11. Describe the best / worst boss you ever had: best boss, clear-minded of what is right direction, delegate job to right people, and promote people solely based on his ability and contribution, meanwhile, behavior himself in a disciplined way; worst boss, no clear sense of direction, interfere in what you are doing, no expertise, extremely selfish.
12. What type of people frustrate you most? Why? Selfish people, always try to grab something from others without contribution.
13. What must an organisation provide in order for you to give your best? Challenging, meritocratic, flexible.
14. What are the three proudest achievements of your life? Current account convertibility, greatest achievement of china’s foreign exchange reform; risk supervision framework; Insead or my wife.
15. What are the two characteristics you feel you can improve upon? Detailed, and demanding
16. Why have you chosen this profession?
17. What, in your mind, are the key qualities required for this job? Analytical skills, financial skills, teamwork, communication skills.
18. Why MBA? Why LBS?
19. Why this firm?
20. How do you think this industry is structured? Is consolidating, but much room to go.
21. How do you think this firm compares against our main competitors? Size, people, ownership of share, focus of business, focus of location, position in lead table.
22. Where do you see yourself in the next five / ten / fifteen years?
For investment banking: I will stay in investment banking for long time, because I like it and want to become more experienced. Then I may leave investment banking, but remain in finance, may go to private equity or venture capital. In term of location, I may return to China, and become senior manager of china’s investment banks.

For consulting company: I will stay in consulting for quite a long time, depending on how long it will satisfy what I am looking for. After that, I may turn to industry to become senior manager, or turn to finance to do private equity, venture capital or asset management.

Typical Stress Questions - designed to test you under pressure
1. What do you have to offer to this firm? Why should we hire you?
2. Who else have you interviewed with? How have you fared?
3. If given an offer, how will you decide to accept it or reject it?
4. How do you respond to working under pressure? Give three examples in your experience where you were under a lot of pressure.
5. What is your philosophy of management?
6. Do you prefer staff or line work?
7. What salary are you worth? Why?
8. How long will it take you to make a contribution to the company?
9. How long will you stay with us?
10. How do you rate yourself as a manager?
11. What new goals have you established recently? Why?
12. Have you received any job offers yet?
13. What features in your previous jobs have you liked? Disliked?
14. Describe a situation where your work was criticised.
15. Describe the essence of success.
16. What was the last book you read?
17. What interests you about this position?
18. Don’t you feel you will be better off in a different sized organisation?
19. What other career alternatives have you considered?
20. Will you be out to take your bosses job?
21. Describe your personality.
22. Have you helped to increase profits, reduce costs, increase customer base, in your last job?
23. Have you hired people before? What would you look for?
24. We do drug screening at the flyback? Got any problem with that?

Pre Interview:

Post Interview

Content of the interview
