尽管我对国内软件,IT业暂时不看好,但我可以把我的一些看法,所见所闻给大家,供有意者参考。
软件方面:
主要是通用软件,应用软件,如财务,杀毒等。这里面恐怕机会不多,不过我个人认为杀毒害是个好生意,多少人是电脑通?多少人用bsd, or linux on their desktop?多少人正确patch windows,update often? as long as windows is popular, anti-virus is a business, because people need it! 现在不少公司在搞网络杀毒,也不错,当然,网络安全更是个好生意。at enterprise side, as i said before ERP, CRM,CMS or whatever the buzz words are, very few people would buy into the concept now. basically it is too much hype, think you for those "can do everything type consulting", they really poluted the market. actually i think there are certain demends for enterprise level applications, the point is to help business save money or make money. the enterprise integration would be a good example. different platforms, different systems, sharing information is a headache for business. also data mining, business intelligence are just not there. all they think BI is still at reporting level Sad. so there are market potentials, but it is not easy to persuade those "senior managemnt" to invest or upgrade their existing systems. but i think it could be different landscape two years later, since more foreign companies are going after them, competition is going to be brutal, benefits from advanced technology and information systems would be more obvious to them. however i dont see much opportunites in personal software market there, duh, piracy is killing everyone Sad.
internet business:
they are pretty much all portals.
SINA.com is heavy in news;
SOHU.com, i never figured out where their strengths are Sad;
netease, their mail system back to 1996/97 were ok, at least some technical elements in it than just a website, now, i dont know, i dont see much stuff.
腾讯,they have huge customer base, that is their core asset. there are other competitors in this field, UC, netease泡泡, basically IM is a killer app from ICQ, it is very cool stuff besides browser. then enterprise IM, collobaration tool,i think there are still more cool ideas will come out in this field.
3721: this is a disgusting business IMO. their plugin is everywhere, as long as naive users click on "yes" to install, damn, they are not going to get ride of it from their system, even they tried to delete from registry. it is a fucking bully, nasty. they are lucky to get bought by yahoo, i am not sure yahoo is making same mistake again this time as they bought broadcast.com before, seems like. 3721 core business is browser toolbar, freaking active X shit. how much technology in it, you tell me. i still couldnt figure out how they are worth 120 million bucks. even they claim they have 300 thousand customers, so what? also pissing me off is CNIC which is more authoritative in this type application had lost market to 3721 ! fxxking unbelievable. more i talked about it, angrier i would get, sorry for my language.
阿里巴巴.another interesting hype in chinese internet business. they raised from claim of being leader of chinese B2B back internet boom, the CEO of Mr. Ma is an interesting character, apparently he got balls. well, they initially charged every business $5,000 a year to be listed in their directory, which was a portrait of attracting more buyers from oversea. well, i dont know what the hell happened, they got loads of people sign up. last time i heard that they claimed that they have 1 million customers, i even heard the rumor that yahoo was interested in them at first, but somehow price for acquisition wasnt reached by two sies, who knows. well, i heard that Mr. Ma got 82 million dollars in 6 minutes from Mr. Sun(CEO of softbank), he definitely has something most of us dont have.
CTRIP.com: a claimed chinese expedia(at least from their PR it is said so), they said they are not a internet business. well, who cares. the success they had was from stealing senior management from elong.com, they got a bunch of travel industry experts from elong. they acquired a hotel booking company which did national wide business. i heard that they had 50 thousand hotel reservations in a day at peak time. not bad business.
ShengDa : i talked about a little bit this one from my another posting, please check on that.
51JOB.com : another good example, they are clearly a leader in online job and recruitment business in china. i even used their service when i was in china to hire programmers. certainly, this is a business which could be doing online. but how they got big is interesting, i heard that they got big from SPAM, which sent shit loads of emails to people's inbox. well, now they are on their way to go public. business is funny sometimes.

from those interter properties, what i could think of are :
1.pattern : VC(angel investing) -----> operation -----> PR(good PR, i could write a whote artile on how PR is done in china) ---->market leader -----> go public
2.how those portals got profitable, i dont want to say, you should go to their sites to check out. 什莫:激情公社,交友中心,.... get it? sex just sells, period.

well, i probably missed a couple of others, i will write up some other time. more stuff will come out, stay tuned, fella
