Kidnappers' leader threatens to kill Chinese hostage in Pakistan
Mon Oct 11, 5:45 AM ET South Asia - AFP
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AFP) - A tribal leader linked to Al-Qaeda threatened to execute one of two Chinese hostages unless the captors were allowed to flee their besieged base near the Afghan border.

Abdullah Mahsud, described as an Al-Qaeda facilitator in the wild South Waziristan region bordering Afghanistan (news - web sites), told AFP he had decided to extend the original 0700 GMT deadline to 1100 GMT Monday on the urging of religious leaders and local tribes.
"I have extended the deadline to 4:00 pm (local time)," he said by satellite phone from an unknown location.
The deadline would not be extended any further, he added.
Mahsud belongs to the fierce Pashtun tribe of the same name which dominates South Waziristan, a remote and harsh tribal district governed only at a distance by Pakistan.
It has become a base for fugitive Al-Qaeda fighters, hundreds of whom poured into the district after their Taliban hosts were driven from power by a US-led invasion. Intelligence officials described Mahsud as an "Al-Qaeda facilitator."
Members of his tribe are holding the two Chinese engineers in the Jandoola area, 75 kilometers (46.5 miles) from the Afghan border, close to a hydroelectric dam they were working on.
Militants abducted the engineers on Saturday morning as they travelled to the dam.
Security forces backed up by armed men from the Jalakhel tribe have surrounded their hideout.
"We are so far concentrating on negotiations. We do not want to take any step that could put the lives of the hostages in danger," an intelligence official told AFP.
Tribal elders and religious leaders have been negotiating with the kidnappers. The Chinese embassy in Islamabad said it had not been directly informed of the threat and was "very concerned."
"We are very much concerned about our Chinese engineers. We believe they are safe and hopefully they will be released," embassy spokesman Zhang Yiming told AFP.
The embassy had been informed by the Pakistani government on Saturday that the hostages had been separated from their immediate abductors and handed over to a local tribe.
Mahsud tribe elders gathered Monday in the nearby town of Tank, some 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) from Jandola, to discuss the kidnapping.
Head of the negotiating team Maulana Merajuddin, a local MP and religious leader, met the abductors and their Chinese hostages on Sunday.
He said the captors had demanded the release of two detained tribesmen and were awaiting orders from their "leader."
"The kidnappers are saying they will do what their leader tells them to do."
The Chinese were being held "in a good environment," he added.
"They are not chained and the attitude of the kidnappers did not appear aggressive. The kidnappers are calm and cool-minded."
The kidnappers warned that the Chinese engineers' lives would be "endangered" if troops used force to free them, Merjuddin added.
