Chinese Manufacturer Makes Bid for Maytag
Haier Group, China's largest appliance maker, joined a group of investors to offer $1.28 billion for U.S. appliance maker Maytag, topping a bid by Ripplewood Holdings. Haier joined with U.S. buyout companies Bain Capital and Blackstone Group to offer $16 a share for Maytag, the maker of Hoover vacuum cleaners and Amana appliances, Bloomberg reports. On May 19, Maytag accepted a $14-a-share bid from a Ripplewood-led group that includes Goldman Sachs Group's GS Capital Partners and J. Rothschild Group. Maytag said it is considering the proposal from Haier. The deal would give the Chinese manufacturer recognized brands in the U.S. for its washing machines, refrigerators and wine coolers, which are sold at outlets of Wal-Mart Stores, Home Depot and Best Buy, Bloomberg notes. The buyout would exceed the size of the purchase of International Business Machines' unprofitable PC unit by China's Lenovo Holdings last month for $1.25 billion.
