在国内学英语时,一直读英文文学作品是学英语的正途,因为中学课本上选了很多英美文学作品,比如,“Maggie’s Gift”(麦琪的礼物),“Robinson Crusoe”(鲁宾孙漂流记),所以,自己在课外也读“生活在密西西比河上”,“红字”。

现在才知道,在公司里,有很多常用词,是文学作品中所没有的,或者是很少见到的。

比如,“command a premium price”,这是什么意思呢?这表示,可以要比较高的价格。与其相对的是“commodity price”,表示是便宜的价格的意思。

大部分人都最终会给公司工作,这些词汇越早学,就越让人觉得你有工作经验。反之,别人会觉得你只有学校(Academic)里的经验,对你找工作很不利。

我收集了一些商用英语词汇,大家可以用它来检测一下自己尚用英语的水平。

a cluster : a number of things of the same kind grouped closely together

a good start : to begin something well, to have an advantage at the beginning

a start-up : a new company just beginning to do business

a string : a set of things following each other closely

academics : college or university teachers
across borders : into many countries
all-embracing : including or covering every aspect of something
assets : property that has value
aware : to have knowledge or understanding
bargaining power : strength of one person or group when discussing prices
being focused : paying attention to
big impact : had a powerful influence
bigger concerns on his mind : other more important things to worry about

breaking the organization down : separate into different smaller parts

breaks all the rules : somebody or something which goes against an accepted principle which says how
things are to be done
bubble up : originate
celebrated : well-known, famous
colleague : someone who works in the same place as someone else
command a premium price : to deserve and receive a high price for something
common sense : practical good sense gained from experience, not study
communes : groups of people who live and work together as a team
competencies : skills

competitive capitalism : economic system where each person is free to compete in business without government interference

competitive edge : advantage over others
conducting : carrying out, directing
consistent : following a regular pattern
cross-cultural Anglo-Dutch partnership : a collaboration between an English and a Dutch person, which stretches across more than one culture
crucial : very important
customer : person or company which buys goods
dated : old-fashioned, belonging to a former time
deal : a business agreement
decentralization : the move of government and businesses from one central office to several more independent smaller ones
deeds : action
develop people : to help people grow in experience and knowledge
dilemma : a situation in which one has to make a difficult choice
discipline : here, a subject of learning studied at university
do-ers : people or organizations who do things or are active
dress codes : rules which tell workers what to wear on the workplace
driving : here, moving something forward
earliest attempt : if you attempt something or you attempt to do something, you try to do it - the earliest attempt is the first attempt in time
efficient : successful, working without waste of time or resources
egalitarianism : the belief that all people are equal and have equal rights
elusive : something or someone that is elusive is difficult to find, achieve, describe or remember
emerged : become known
encouraging : causing feelings of courage, hope and confidence
executive career : a job relating to the management of an organisation and to putting plans into effect
faltered : became weak
fashionable : popular at a certain time
fired : dimissed from a job
focus : direct the attention of
focused on : to focus on something is to direct attention to something
foster : help to grow or develop
full-time employees : persons regularly paid by a company to work all the normal working time
gain competitive advantage : succeed over the competition
get fixated on : concentrated too much on one thing ignoring other possibilities
gets under the skin : understands the essential characteristics of something
global economy : the making and using of money across the whole world
globalization : movement towards global or worldwide scope
govern : control, direct
great leap forward : a big result or development
gross margin : difference between the manufacturing cost and the selling price
guru : a Hindu spiritual leader. Also used to indicate a respected and influential expert on something. About twenty years ago the leading thinkers in the field of management started to be called 'gurus'.
hands-on : having practical experience, not just dealing with theory
harness : to use something
hired : employed, given a job
illusion : a false idea, a false belief about something
implies : means, translates into
innovative : person or thing which is new or makes changes
insights : understanding of a complex situation or problem
insights : clear understanding
invisible ingredient : a quality which is not obvious
keep on doing it : continue doing something
leadership : the position of leader
made his mark : became successful and influential in an activity or in a place
measure results : judge whether results are good or bad
mentors : persons who give advice to others over a long period of time
motivate : encourage someone to do something
nanny : a woman employed to take care of children in a family
narrow : limited
new entrants : new companies who enter a market
niche market : special place in the market occupied by one company
non-profit organizations : companies which are not run to make money
outputs : something that a company produces
outsourcing : obtaining services from other companies or individuals rather than employing full-time members of staff to provide them
outstanding : very good
partner promiscuously : to share business with lots of different people or organizations
partnership : organizations where members share risks and profits
perks : extra items given by a company to workers in addition to their salaries (such as company cars, private health insurance etc.)
plants : large factories
portfolio : a case or collection of different work
privatization : selling a government-owned industry to private owners
production quotas : fixed amount of products which should be produced
profit-sharing schemes : arrangements where workers get a share of the profits of the company they work for
proprietary position : a position where you own legal, eg. intellectual rights
purpose : reason for existence
puts people first : puts the benefit of people before the benefit of the organization
reconcile : to find agreement between ideas, situations etc. that seem to be in opposition
remind : to help someone to remember
revels in : gets pleasure from
rewarded : to receive something in return for doing something good
rigorous analysis : thorough and exact examination
risk-taking : actions which may lead to loss or defeat
role model : a person whose behaviour is copied or is likely to be copied by others
rules and procedures : instructions that tell you what you are allowed to do and what you are not allowed to do
security procedures : a set of actions necessary to protect an organization or its employees against violence, lawbreaking etc.
serves up : delivers, offers
set objectives : decide which aims need to be achieved
shared consciousness : shared ideas, feelings, opinions
shared task : responsibility of more than one person
shares his belief : he also believes in
shrinking : becoming smaller
significant : important, considerable
spread around : make known or available over a large area or to a large number of people
strategy : plan of future action
subcontracting : signing a contract with a company for them to do part of the work for a project
suggested : proposed, put forward for consideration
'suits' : people who wear a suit - jacket and trousers or skirt - here, investors
supervision : being watched to see if work is done well
take control of our own destiny : to decide and make things happen in one's life
the bible of corporate strategy : here figurative, the main text guide to business planning
tight-loose structure : they used tight control where necessary, and loose control where they could give people autonomy
time and time again : lots of times
time clocks : machines which record when a worker arrives for work and punches his card
to bid for funds : to attempt to obtain money to do something
to challenge : to fight, to try and take over from
to plough on regardless : to continue in spite of difficulties
to sacrifice their personal egos : to forget about their own interests to achieve a common goal
to take a stand : to declare what your definite position is
