PE and IB have some overlap
More and more friends are asking the PE and IB now. I just want to add two cents! Investment Banking (IB) and Private Equity (PE) are not fully exclusive. IB is a major function of banking beside the corporate and consumer banking. Therefore, IB is usually related to financial institutions. PE is usually applied to the financial operations for the equity-structure company before IPO. Another view point, PE is also applied to the operations for the public companies when the financial managers work for a private fund. Sometimes, the IB and PE people chase for the similar targets at the same battle field. After a certain time, most portfolio companies of IB and PE will be examined under sunshine when they go public (Assume their listed stock exchange market has strong financial regulations.  )
It’s true that many big cats in IB and under-performing hedge fund managers have joined PE in the past 2 years in the USA. (Just see the reports from Business Week recently.) However, the IB and PE both become hotter and hotter in China now. The IB/PE fellows are frequent enemies on the conference tables at daytime, and they visit same pub/night clubs with similar circle of models at night time. There are still tons of interesting topics about PE, VC, IB, and bunch of funds! I’ll just stop here and welcome others to add more observations.
