Global Needlestick Prevention Group Honors Award Recipients As It Marks 5th Annual International Sharps Injury Prevention Awareness Month

ISIPS, the first international needlestick prevention group, announced that six recipients are being honored for reducing sharps injuries with a Sharps Injury Prevention Award, with an additional 14 recipients receiving honorable mention awards. These awards are part of the International Sharps Injury Prevention Awareness Month activities being commemorated during December 2006, starting with World AIDS Day, December 1st.

A number of very worthy individuals were nominated for the ISIPS 2006 International Sharps Injury Prevention Awards. Nominations were reviewed by a nominating committee, comprised of representatives from Terumo Medical, Tyco Kendall Healthcare, Ritract Medical, BD, Retractable Technologies Inc., B. Braun, Managing Infection Control and the International Sharps Injury Prevention Society (ISIPS).

We are grateful to these organizations for sponsoring the awards this year.

We thank those individuals that have made a difference in getting the message of sharps injury prevention to healthcare workers and employers around the globe. We owe a debt of gratitude to those that have provided a healthier climate for healthcare workers and others.

The ISIPS 2006 Sharps Injury Prevention Awards have been given to honor six individuals who have demonstrated creative, consistent contributions to the field of needlestick prevention.

The ISIPS 2006 International Sharps Injury Prevention Award recipients are:

Letita C. Goodman, RN, BSN

In her current position as an Employee Health Nurse at St. Clair Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., Ms. Goodman is responsible for case management of hospital employee injuries, evaluating and monitoring employee blood and body fluid exposures, coordinating annual employee flu immunizations, serving as a member on the hospital Safety Committee, Infection Control Committee, Employee Safety Committee, Domestic Violence Awareness Committee, Product and Evaluation Committee, and Pandemic Influenza Planning Committee.

Donna Jean Haiduven, PhD, RN, CIC

Donna Jean Haiduven is an assistant professor at the University of South Florida, College of Public Health, and Center for Biological Defense, and a nurse researcher at James A. Haley V.A. Patient Safety Research Center in Tampa, Fla. "My most rewarding experiences working in this field have been with students," states Dr. Haiduven. "Many of them have gone on to medical school and other healthcare professions with a greater knowledge and appreciation of safer needle devices and their role in preventing or reducing sharps injuries in healthcare workers."

Bonnie Kashmiri, RN, BA

Bonnie Kashmiri, recently transitioned from her position as an Epidemiology Specialist at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc, Mich., to her current position as administrative supervisor at Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center in Fort Myers, Fla. She is a member of the Michigan Chapter of the AOHP and MSIC. Leading the Sharps Improvement Team and Operating Room sharps improvement team at Genesys for three years, as an Epidemiology Specialist Ms. Kashmiri was responsible for hospital-wide surveillance for hospital infections, construction project review, bio-preparedness, sharps injury data and surveillance.

Janice Neubauer, ARNP, MSN, COHN-S

The Employee Health Nurse Practitioner for 1,000 employees at Coral Springs Medical Center, Coral Springs, Fla., in October of 2004, Janice Neubauer was asked to take on the additional responsibility of chairperson for the North Broward Hospital District Needle Safety Committee. As a result, the District's overall contaminated needlestick rate for fiscal year 2006 was decreased by 22%!

Janie Ott, RT (R) (CV) (CT)

Several years ago the President and CEO of Freeman Health System, Gary Duncan, set a goal for his organization to be the safest hospital in the country. To that end, Janie Ott, RT (R) (CV) (CT), has been on top of new safety products as they become available to make sure the hospital is compliant with any safety opportunities available, even though it is recognized there is extra cost to the system. The hospital has seen a positive trend in the reduction of safety-related incidents since the program began in 2000, demonstrating Ms. Ott's effectiveness in her role related to safety.

Christine M. Pionk, MS, RN, COHN

As a nurse practitioner in the Employee Health Services clinic at the University of Michigan Hospitals in Ann Arbor, Mich., Christine M. Pionk has been instrumental in working with the surgery department to institute safety needles and to update policy and procedures regarding sharps usage. "It has been an ongoing challenge to reduce the number of sharps injuries," Ms. Pionk states. "Together we have made it a priority to reduce sharps injuries, and I certainly appreciate their guidance and support."

Honorable Mentions

Nominations for this year's awards have been truly outstanding. We would like to recognize the following individuals for the contributions they have made. It is through their efforts that the healthcare work environment continues to improve in the many areas impacting safe sharps practices. Please join us in congratulating the 2006 Sharps Injury Prevention honorees.

Dr. Emmanuel Okechukwu

For the past decade, Dr. Emmanuel Okechukwu has been consistent and dogged in promoting healthcare safety in Nigeria. He applies sharps disposal as an entry point for educating and creating awareness about the neglected area of healthcare safety in Nigeria, Africa's largest country. He has carried the campaign to many states in Nigeria. Recently, Action Family Foundation, where he is the medical advisor/president, formed a Civil Society Coalition with a number of NGOs and evolved an understanding with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to handle sharps disposal in two of the 20 local government areas as a pilot. Dr. Okechukwu also serves as the Nigeria Country Representative for Safe Observer International.

Gareth Clarke

Gareth Clarke serves as CEO of Inviro Medical Devices and is responsible for the launch of the patented InviroSNAP range of manually retractable safety syringes. Rob C. Fowler, RN, BSN is the infection control coordinator for Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast, Maine. Mr. Fowler keeps on top of current trends and products by reviewing literature as well as participating in both local and national programs. As the chair of the Needle Safety Committee, he has led the hospital to a needleless IV system, safety scalpels house-wide, removed razors house-wide, and ensured all needles have some form of safety device.

Denise Kaplan

Serving as the occupational health manager for Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, N.J., Denise Kaplan's ongoing efforts, to not only prevent sharps injuries but to streamline the entire exposure injury prevention program, are cited as the reasons the hospital has been able to achieve lower injury rates, and sustain rates lower than the national average. She is proactive in reporting injury rates to various hospital committees, and consistently involves key users of the sharps products to solicit feedback for evaluation.

Michael Korn

An industrial design engineering postgraduate student at The Royal College of Art in London, England, Michael Korn has a particular interest in medical innovations. He was recently awarded the college's Selected Works Award for his patented StickSafe hospital tray, a simple solution that allows a safe one-handed use for extracting, resheathing and removing needles from syringes. The paper-pulp disposable tray has been ergonomically redesigned specifically for healthcare.

She has a true passion for every task she takes on." Several years ago, one of those tasks was taking the lead role in the CRMS's Sharps Safety Committee. From purchasing, training, and using and disposing of sharps, her leadership and commitment has transformed every aspect of the sharps management program at CRMC. During the past five years sharps injuries have dropped by nearly 60 percent, and continue to fall each year.
