Citi Donates RMB 1,155,000 to Support Program to Facilitate SME Growth in China
Shanghai – Citi announced today the launch of the Fudan-Citi Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Senior Management Training Program. The program is the first of its kind in China, providing formal training to senior executives of SMEs in China, free of charge. The initiative has been funded by the Citi Foundation through a major grant of RMB 1,155,000 and will be managed by the Management School of Fudan University.
Mr. Richard Stanley, Chief Executive Officer of Citi China, said, “Although SME’s have become one of the main driving forces of the Chinese economy, the sector remains underserved. Citi, through our Commercial Banking Group, is strongly committed to taking a leadership role in supporting the growth of SMEs in China. We are delighted to be launching this program in partnership with the prestigious Fudan University, which will be an important driver in promoting the healthy development of the sector.”
Mr. Lu Xiongwen, Dean of Management School of Fudan University noted, “ We are excited to launch such a pioneering program with Citi to fuel the growth of Chinese SMEs. We expect that these executives will put what they have learnt from the courses into practice, and in doing so, bring their companies to the next level of growth.”
Despite the SME sector being a key contributor industrial output in China, the sector still faces many challenges in areas such as financing, technological innovation and implementation, product marketing and distribution, and management. In general terms, many SMEs lack training in establishing long-term business strategies and systematic development and implementation of business plans. A lack of financial knowledge becomes a bottleneck for development. The Fudan-Citi SME Senior Management Training Program has been created to specifically address these issues, with its curriculum combining both theory and practice.
Each program will comprise a total of 12 core courses in business administration for a class of 50 executives, mainly from the Yangtze River Delta region. A series of lectures on modern management, focusing on topical issues in the SME sector, will supplement these courses. The faculty includes professors and scholars from the Management School of Fudan as well as senior Citi executives. SME experts, in particular from the manufacturing sector, will also take part, sharing and exchanging experiences and insights with local executives. As part of the program, the Fudan-Citi SME Entrepreneurs Forum will be held twice a year, attended by 300 entrepreneurs each time, to discuss current topics and issues concerning SME development in China
Citi China launched its SME program in 2004, one of the first SME-focused initiatives of its kind by a foreign bank in China. Over the past three years, its has developed from offering remittance and granting circulating funds to providing an extensive array of financial services that include trading, finance, loan management and cash management. Today Citi’s Commercial Banking Group has operations in the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, and the Bohai areas, with dedicated teams in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Tianjin.
