Wildfire Smoke Lands in Atlanta
People all over Metro Atlanta woke up to the sight and smell of smoke on Wednesday. It's from the wildfires burning nearly 300 miles away in south Georgia. Winds blowing from the south brought the smoke north that has affected visibility and even the health of many people.
The haze is still around, but Wednesday's clouds and rain have slowly diluted the blanket of smoke. Still, it has been enough that some people were wondering, worrying and even ailing.
It is not the kind of blanket you want to find on top of you when you wake up in the morning -- a hazy coat draped over Metro Atlanta was enough to sting the eyes, the nose and the lungs.
Kenny and Ethel McKibben had to run from the smoke before they could take their four mile walk.
"It was kind of thick," said Kenny McKibben. "The smell and everything -- so we just came up further north to get away from the smoke."
By the time they traveled from Forest Park to Atlanta's Piedmont Park, the smoke has thinned out a bit, but Ethel was already feeling the effects.
"It kind of hit me in my head and gave me a headache," Ethel said. "I was telling my husband, we don't need to walk. He said let's get away from the area."
The smoke has covered a lot of area, traveling nearly 300 miles from that massive wildfire near the Georgia-Florida border. It is proof of just how massive that fire has become.
The people who measure air pollution in Metro Atlanta said at the very least, Wednesday will end up as a Code Orange day -- one that is unhealthy for sensitive groups, like people who suffer from asthma. Doctors have said there is enough smoke here that it could trigger an asthma attack.
"We're in grass pollen season now," said Dr. David Tanner of the Atlanta Allergy Clinic. "Grass pollen can trigger an asthmatic episode, and then the smoke could be an added factor that would perhaps be the straw that breaks the camel's back."
For Kenny and Ethel McKibben, it was an inconvenience and a headache that traveled nearly 300 miles to find them.
It was so smoky at one point, that some Metro Atlanta fire departments were flooded with calls from people who thought their home or their neighbors' homes were on fire. It was certainly an inconvenience for those firefighters who had to respond, only to find the smoke was coming from a long way off.
