As a 复旦人 my dad told me before 1949 in Shanhai that was a so-so school. On the other hand, generally speaking those poor but smart kids went to Jiaotong Univ., while the rich but less smart young people went to St. John's.
Some middle schools were also well-known at that time in the region, such as 南昌葆灵女中 Baldwin Girls' School (美国卫理公会) (阳明路) and 宁波的
甬江女中 Riverside Girls’ Academy(美北长老会、美北浸礼会)where my mom attended and graduated.
