McCain and Obama: On the Issues
A look at the stances of the Republican and Democratic Presidential candidates in 16 crucial areas

The final two major-party Presidential candidates come with strong convictions. Arizona Senator John McCain is known as a "maverick" Republican, both a foreign policy hawk and a strong proponent of fighting global warming. Illinois Senator Barack Obama has cast himself as the agent of change, a Democrat whose hopeful message has inspired a new generation—and a bunch of the old guard, too—to enter the political fray. On some issues, such as the economy and the Iraq War, the candidates clash fiercely. But on others—immigration, the environment—their message carries more agreement than difference. At least one bit of the political conventional wisdom is true: Whoever wins the White House in 2008, Washington is in for a change.
